Fresh Meat FAQ

[edit] I am a new or returning player, where do I begin?

First of all, welcome to Warlord. Secondly, let’s lay down some pertinent history. In January 2008 AEG announced that they were ceasing production of Warlord CCG, but in February 2008 German company Phoenix Interactive (PI) announced that they had licensed the game and would resume production. PI released its first product, 4th Edition, in August 2008 with the first expansion, Shattered Empires, having released in December 2008, followed by the4E Learn-to-Play Set in February 2009. The second expansion, Crimson Coast, released in April 2009, followed by Treasure Chest in July 2009. Sands of Oblivion was released in March 2010. 4th Edition reset the environment and is the most recent base set. If you’re a new or returning player it is the ideal entry point to the game.

Warlord CCG is no longer a collectible card game, but is instead a customizable card game. This means there is no more randomness to the merchandise sold. There are no more booster packs or starter decks, but instead Adventure Path Sets. There are currently 19 Adventure Path Sets - six from 4th Edition, three from Shattered Empires, three from Crimson Coast, and seven from Sands of Oblivion:

  1. The Dark Heart of the Forest
  2. Against the Tyrants
  3. The Temple of Eternal Flame
  4. Forbidden Knowledge of Kylnion
  5. Ambush in the Swamps of Eban-Tarsis
  6. The Gargoyle’s Retribution
  7. Secrets of the Frozen Peaks
  8. Ports of Treachery
  9. War on the Plains
  10. Justice of the Black Sun
  11. Terror from the Deep
  12. Virtues of the Stalwart
  13. Ember Winds
  14. Secrets of Winterhold
  15. The Forest of Bone
  16. Tales of the Ruby Rogue
  17. Rites of the Ogre Magi
  18. Blood for Blood
  19. Ebon Wings

There are also two special standalone sets.

4E Learn-to-Play Set comes with two decks (Elves and Mercenaries) and is mostly reprints, but has a few new cards, including two new warlords.

Treasure Chest is an all foil set which is also mostly reprints, but contains a new character for each faction, as well as a new action and item for each class.

Each deck has 55 cards, but since each distinct product contains two decks if you were to buy, for example, Forbidden Knowledge of Kylnion you would be purchasing 110 cards. Starting with Sands of Oblivion, the Adventure paths are single decks of 55 cards.

The rarity scheme is different under PI than it was with AEG. The current rarity scheme is set-up so that if you buy one of each of the six distinct products in 4th Edition you will have three copies of each common, two copies of each uncommon, and one copy of each rare.

[edit] What's the most recent expansion?

Sands of Oblivion is the most recent expansion, released on March 23, 2010. So far it is the third expansion after the release of the 4th Edition base set.

[edit] Where do I buy Warlord CCG?

Phoenix Interactive hasn’t been able to get Warlord CCG into distribution yet, so there are few stores that sell the game. However, there are some stores that sell it, plus PI sells it directly through their website and they allow game clubs to order in bulk.

To order directly from PI, visit cardmasters.de/shop.

Stores that sell Warlord CCG in the United States are (alphabetically by state):

Retailers and game clubs who wish to order product and for a complete list of all retailers and game clubs currently selling Warlord CCG visit this link.

[edit] What’s new in 4th Edition?

Well, depending upon when you last played quite a few things might have changed so it’s a good idea to read the rules (it’s a pdf file). Phoenix Interactive has made some very noticeable, big changes but they haven’t altered the substance of the game and have actually streamlined the rules to make a lot more sense. Warlord CCG is still “the game you already know how to play.”

Specific changes include:

Other, older changes made under AEG’s control that affect 4th Edition game play include:

[edit] With Phoenix in charge, what’s the new official website?

Phoenix Interactive operates the following official websites:

[edit] How is the faction balance nowadays?

All major events, including the Winter Campaign, have shown a mixture of warlords/faction making the top 4 and champion position. Balance appears by all measures to be healthy.

[edit] Are my existing cards any good?

4th Edition is comprised of 336 cards, 270 of which are reprints. Shattered Empires is comprised of 168 cards, 20 of which are reprints. If you already own copies of cards that were printed before 4th Edition but were also reprinted in 4th Edition, they’re legal to use. Be aware that it is each player’s responsibility to know the current text, or MRP, of each card they use. Also note that there are minor physical differences in the cards produced by PI and AEG, so if you’re going to mingle cards from both manufacturers you should use card sleeves.

For a list of all the reprints in 4th Edition, see 4E reprints and for a list of all the reprints in Shattered Empires, see SE reprints.

[edit] What good are GP?

GP (Gold Pieces) were introduced in 4E on Treasure cards. They are used to "buy" promo cards at events with an official Phoenix Interactive presence or through the mail. For a comprehensive list of which cards are available with GPs see Gold Piece Redemption.

[edit] What kind of promo cards exist?

The most up-to-date listing of currently legal promos is found at WarlordCCG.de/blog/rules.4e-faq-and-promo-legality, or on the wiki's page: 4E format.

[edit] How do I get promo cards?

It depends on how you mean the question. If you want promo cards for your personal collection then read on, but if you want them to distribute as prizes then skip to the next paragraph. Promo cards are being distributed through a variety of channels. Some are acquired by joining the Ordo Phoenicis Ascendentis, some are acquired by pre-ordering expansions, and some are acquired as prizes for participating and/or winning tournaments. Some promo cards are only available in Europe and some are only available in the United States. Some promo cards are available through the gold piece redemption program. For a list of all the 4E promos in print and information on how to acquire specific cards, see 4E format.

To receive promo cards for distribution at an event, you need to be affiliated with a registered store or club. For more information about that procedure, visit http://www.warlordccg.de/blog/clubs_and_stores_google_map.html

[edit] How do I get the alternate art Niobe?

There is a growing number of alternate art cards. Each of their individual pages explains how the cards are/were distributed.

[edit] Where do I get German-language cards?

If you live outside of Europe then you'll have a hard time getting any of the exlusive European content, such as German-language cards and promo cards. German-language cards have only been made available in the 4E Learn-to-Play Set, which is printed in both English and German. However the German version is only available through PI's online store and it only ships to addresses in Europe. The exclusive European promos, like alternate art Niobe, are also only ditributed in Europe. In both of these cases you will need to know somebody with whom to trade or purchase in order to receive this content. The same standard applies to Europeans trying to get exclusive American content like the alternate art Naram-Sin.
